Christmas Then and Now
56
In spite of what many people think, Christmas was a Pagan holiday in northern Europe, until Christianity consolidated Pagan and Christian holidays. Jesus was most probably born in July. The Christmas tree was lit to brighten the darkest night in the year. The end of December marked also the coldest days. Families gathered and shared everything. Aunts, Uncles, and close friends would come to visit with presents. The presents were goodies that were shared for a large meal in a family and friends gathering. This tradition was expanded, so people started bringing other presents, besides goodies. Presents in older times tended to be things made by the person (s) giving them. Wooden toys, embroidery, clay pots, and oranges were very common gifts.
In modern times, we don't make so many things. We buy them. Christmas has remained as a time when we gather with family and friends. Giving is part of the tradition. If giving is an obligation, then the best is not to give. However, it is a beautiful thing to have a special time to give. People, especially children build their hopes on the gifts. Expectation and anticipation turns the occasion from a single day event to a season. We sing songs, anticipating the 25th. We light up our houses and stores in anticipation. We get in the Christmas spirit. People smile more. People become more polite. That makes Charismas a great time. That's the reason I love Christmas.
I have everything. If I want something, I get it. I couldn't care less for whatever I am given, but every gift I get is "exactly what I wanted" because the person remembered my in this occasion. That's the spirit of receiving.
I go to the K-mart parking lot with lots of presents. I give them away (no wrapping) to any mother I see coming out, looking sad or depressed. Sometimes, a child comes and looks at the toys and gets one too. I know that parents suffer when they can't give a present to their child in this special holiday. This is why I give to strangers.
Christmas is also a very important holiday for the economy. Many companies do 50% of their annual business in Christmas time. They have to market Christmas or many people would lose their jobs. We have to remember that with each gift we buy we are keeping several people employed and are helping our nation.
All and all, Christmas is so much more than just Christmas!
